Cleanup is an environmental cleanup app for volunteers to host or attend clean ups trash in Michigan. Participants accumulate points for attending, which then are redeemed as free food vouchers or discounts to sponsored food chains.

WHY?

The world is constantly changing, recent environmental disasters and the amount of litter on the sides of the roads brought the issue to our attention.


As an on-the-go person, I used to eat fast food often. The amount of packaging and waste being thrown away was concerning.


After conducting multiple interviews, our intention is to bring awareness to this issue by designing and building an app for the local community to participate in environmental waste cleanups.

THE RESEARCH BEHIND THE CONCEPT

Understand how packaging used in fast food restaurants affects people and the environment, and what can be done to reduce the amount of waste coming from these businesses.

  • How does packaging affect the environment?

  • How does packaging affect the experience of customers?

  • How does the convenience of plastic and paper packaging affect the experience of the consumer?

  • What can be done to make the packaging more eco-friendly?

  • How much plastic does a fast-food chain use on an average day?

I connected my findings in an affinity matrix, sorting into four categories:

1) effects on people

2) effects on the environment

3) design for disposability

4) design for responsibility

My findings pushed me towards the direction of design for disposability and effects on the environment.

INTERVIEWS

In order to understand the perspective and opinions of our target audience, we conducted interviews with 4 college students on: 1) their experience working at a fast food chain 2) how often they are consuming fast food 3) what they are doing to reduce waste and pollution

THEMES/FINDINGS FROM INTERVIEWS

CONSUMERS WANT A FAST AND EASY EXPERIENCE
The experience with the costumer and worker, the quality and how quickly food is received are all important parts of the experience going out to eat fast food.


POLLUTION IS AFFECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT
Most respondents noticed trash the most around the highway exits and are becoming more aware of how bad people litter the environment.


PACKAGING AFFECTS THE OVERALL EXPERIENCE
The wrapping of the food in paper and plastic packaging is convenient and a easy solution to a quick food experience

THE IMPACT OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Recycling and doing little things like throwing away your trash or using less plastic can make a positive change.


TIME AND LOCATION THAT CONSUMERS EAT FAST FOOD Most of the respondents eat fast food at night when there is nothing else to eat, a few eat it after their shift at work because it is easy and close to their home.

SOLUTION

An application that will:

 

  • Have local volunteer events to pick up trash in a local environment with either referral incentives (ex. how DOSH does referral incentive) or a rewards program
     

  • Important information about how to correctly recycle and the small but helpful things people can do to save the planet
